PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY SYMPTOMS
Could Your Symptoms Be Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy can feel different from person to person. For some, it begins as occasional tingling or numbness in the toes. For others, burning, sensitivity, or nerve pain can make walking, sleeping, or even the touch of a bedsheet uncomfortable.
Common symptoms include:
✓ Numbness in the feet or toes
✓ Tingling or pins-and-needles
✓ Burning sensations
✓ Sharp, shooting, or electric-like pain
✓ Increased sensitivity to touch
✓ Unusual hot or cold sensations
✓ Weakness or heaviness in the legs or feet
✓ Difficulty with balance or walking
Symptoms often begin in the feet and toes and may gradually progress. Some people experience significant pain, while others notice a progressive loss of sensation.
Because peripheral neuropathy can have many different causes, understanding what you're feeling and why it may be happening is an important part of determining the right approach to care.
UNDERSTANDING PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY
What Causes Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy isn't a single disease. It occurs when nerves outside the brain and spinal cord become damaged or don't function properly—and there are many different reasons this can happen.
Diabetes is one of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy. Over time, elevated blood sugar and other metabolic changes can affect peripheral nerves, often causing symptoms that begin in the feet and toes.
DIABETIC NEUROPATHY
Sometimes no clear cause is identified, even after medical evaluation. This is called idiopathic neuropathy. A diagnosis of “idiopathic,” however, doesn't necessarily mean there are no factors worth investigating.
IDIOPATHIC NEUROPATHY
CHEMOTHERAPY-INDUCED NEUROPATHY
Certain chemotherapy medications can affect peripheral nerves, leading to numbness, tingling, burning, sensitivity, or pain in the hands and feet. Symptoms may develop during treatment or persist afterward.
OTHER CAUSES OF PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY
Neuropathy Can Have Other Causes, Too
Peripheral neuropathy may also be associated with nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune conditions, certain medications, nerve injury or compression, infections, metabolic dysfunction, alcohol exposure, and other health conditions.
Identifying potential contributing factors is an important part of determining the right approach to care. Understanding your health history and the factors that may be contributing to your symptoms is an important part of developing an individualized treatment plan.
OUR APPROACH
A Different Approach to Neuropathy Care
Many people with peripheral neuropathy have already tried medications, supplements, physical therapy, acupuncture, or other treatments—yet continue to struggle with numbness, tingling, burning, pain, or changes in sensation.
At HomeTown Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine, we don't believe neuropathy care should be one-size-fits-all. We take a comprehensive approach that considers both the symptoms you're experiencing and the factors that may be contributing to nerve dysfunction.
Address the Symptoms & Affected Nerves
Our treatment approach is designed to help reduce numbness, tingling, burning, nerve pain, and other uncomfortable sensations while supporting better function and quality of life.
Look Beyond the Symptoms
When appropriate, we also consider metabolic, nutritional, inflammatory, lifestyle, and other factors that may be contributing to nerve dysfunction or making improvement more difficult.
This allows us to build your care around your individual presentation of neuropathy—not simply the diagnosis on your chart.
PERSONALIZED NEUROPATHY TREATMENT
How We Treat Peripheral Neuropathy
No two cases of neuropathy are exactly alike. Your treatment plan is based on your symptoms, health history, type of neuropathy, and how you respond to care.
Rather than relying on a single therapy, we use an individualized combination approach designed to reduce symptoms, support function, and address factors that may be contributing to your neuropathy.
Acupuncture & Electroacupuncture
Acupuncture and electroacupuncture are used to target areas affected by neuropathy and support pain modulation, circulation, nerve function, and symptom relief. Treatment is tailored to the location and pattern of your symptoms rather than using the same protocol for every patient.
Advanced Bioelectric Therapies
Specialized forms of electrical stimulation may be incorporated alongside acupuncture to address nerve pain, altered sensation, and other neuropathy symptoms. These therapies allow treatment to be further customized based on your presentation and response.
Integrative & Functional Support
Laboratory testing, nutritional support, supplements, lifestyle strategies, or other integrative approaches may be incorporated when clinically appropriate and relevant to your treatment plan.
The goal isn't to use every therapy available. It's to determine which combination of care makes the most sense for you.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Your Neuropathy Care, Step by Step
Your care begins with understanding your symptoms, health history, and how neuropathy is affecting your daily life. From there, we develop a personalized treatment plan and monitor your progress along the way.
We start by discussing your symptoms, diagnosis, health history, previous treatments, and the ways neuropathy is affecting your daily activities and quality of life.
01
Comprehensive Evaluation
02
Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on your presentation, we'll recommend a course of care and determine which combination of therapies is most appropriate for you.
03
Consistent Treatment
Neuropathy typically requires a series of treatments rather than a single visit. Your care may evolve as we learn how your symptoms respond to treatment.
04
Progress & Reassessment
We monitor changes in your symptoms and function throughout care and periodically reassess your progress to ensure we stay aligned with your treatment goals.
THE GOAL OF TREATMENT
Less Neuropathy Pain. More Life.
Neuropathy isn't just about numbness, tingling, or burning. It's about what those symptoms can keep you from doing.
Maybe it's difficult to get comfortable enough to sleep. Walking isn't as easy as it used to be. Exercise has become uncomfortable. Or you're simply tired of your feet demanding your attention throughout the day.
Our goal is to help reduce the impact neuropathy has on your everyday life so you can focus less on your symptoms—and more on living.
Treatment will help you work toward:
✓ Less burning, tingling, or nerve pain
✓ More comfortable walking and movement
✓ Better sleep with fewer nighttime symptoms
✓ Greater confidence with everyday activities
✓ Improved comfort and quality of life
Progress looks different for every patient. That's why we focus on meaningful changes in the symptoms and activities that matter most to you.

Acupuncture is used as part of our approach to help manage symptoms associated with peripheral neuropathy, including pain, burning, tingling, and altered sensation. At HomeTown, acupuncture may be combined with electroacupuncture, bioelectric therapies, and integrative support based on your individual needs.
-
We work with multiple forms of peripheral neuropathy, including diabetic neuropathy, idiopathic neuropathy, and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Because neuropathy can have many causes, we evaluate each patient's history and symptoms individually.
-
Neuropathy generally requires a course of care rather than one or two treatments. The number and frequency of visits will depend on factors such as the type and severity of your neuropathy, how long you've had symptoms, your overall health, and how you respond to treatment.
-
Many patients seek our care after trying other approaches. Previous treatment doesn't necessarily mean there are no other options. We look at what you've already tried, how you responded, and whether a different combination or treatment strategy may be appropriate.
